It's a typical Hawera story. Mark Hughson worked as a gofer at an accountancy practice during his university holidays. Now he owns the business, employs 20 staff and has his name over the door: Hughson and Associates.
His parents were small business people in Opunake and Mark liked the book-keeping side of the business; he was good at it and thought he’d like to teach it. But he ended up being a practitioner instead.
“I think I did the right thing. The attraction of this firm was that the partners were in their latter years and I could see the potential for someone younger taking over when they retired. It certainly offered more opportunities than teaching or being a city accountant.”
Hawera is a good place to be in business and therefore a good place for accountants. It’s quite a wealthy little town,” says Mark. “When I first arrived one of the bank managers told me that it was known as a place where you could make your Mark as Bank Manager.

I enjoy my work I love advising clients and working with them to achieve their goals. I pride myself that our advice is always relevant to our clients needs and understandable to the client. A recent challenge has been my involvement in South Taranaki Medical Trust and the establishment of Southcare bringing together 3 doctors practices to provide medical and emergency services to our region. I have also been involved with St Josephs BOT for 13 years. Outside of the office I am a father to 3 daughters and 1 son. I enjoy travelling and have travelled extensively outside of New Zealand. My other passions are wine, food & motorcycles.

I am an Accountant with a background in banking and accounts, both in Taranaki and Europe, where I had three years overseas experience. I completed my degree by correspondence whilst raising my children, and am looking forward to putting this into practice. I am married with two preschool children. Currently we are in the middle of a house building project.

I am married with 3 adult children and 2 beautiful grand daughters. We have recently returned to Hawera after 9 years up in Tauranga. My interest are playing golf, watching rugby & rugby league, walking and entertaining grand kids on Sundays.

Jacqui is an Accounting Clerk and is involved in the processing of GST returns and the coding of annual accounts. Before taking on this new challenge Jacqui worked extensively in Administration within the office, her main task being the completion of financial statements for the clients. I am looking forward to the new challenges involved in moving into a new area within the work structure and am looking forward to meeting clients in my new capacity as Accounting Clerk.

I have been working for Hughson and Associates for over 27 years. “I love chatting to clients” and this fits in well with my role as Client Services Manager. I can offer guidance in GST, ACC & Payroll and I am also knowledgeable in other aspects of accounting so can assist with other enquiries. Outside of work I love to travel and I enjoy Summer & Winter holidays relaxing on the beach and fishing.

Julie is responsible for managing our final accounts. She moved from the UK in 2004 and is living in Hawera, married no children. She has an extensive background in Financial Services. Julie has come to us from the Kiwibank and Postshop. She enjoys socialising with friends and travel.
