It's a typical Hawera story. Mark Hughson worked as a gofer at an accountancy practice during his university holidays. Now he owns the business, employs 20 staff and has his name over the door: Hughson and Associates.

His parents were small business people in Opunake and Mark liked the book-keeping side of the business; he was good at it and thought he’d like to teach it. But he ended up being a practitioner instead.

“I think I did the right thing. The attraction of this firm was that the partners were in their latter years and I could see the potential for someone younger taking over when they retired. It certainly offered more opportunities than teaching or being a city accountant.”

Hawera is a good place to be in business and therefore a good place for accountants. It’s quite a wealthy little town,” says Mark. “When I first arrived one of the bank managers told me that it was known as a place where you could make your Mark as Bank Manager.

A recent challenge has been my involvement in South Taranaki Medical Trust and the establishment of Southcare bringing together 3 doctors practices to provide medical and emergency services to our region. I have also been involved with St Josephs BOT for 13 years. Outside of the office I am a father to 3 daughters and 1 son. I enjoy travelling and have travelled extensively outside of New Zealand. My other passions are wine, food & motorcycles.
